Set of scabbard/sword-belt, "rain-guard" and grip cover for a Scandinavian type sword forged by Gaël Fabre (Oakeshott type XVIIIa).
Characteristics of the scabbard/sword belt :
- Custom made lime wood core assembled with animal glue and fully lined with linen inside
- Covering in vegetable tanned leather, dyed (natural dye) and waxed
- Custom-made brass chape
- Sword belt strap in vegetable tanned leather, dyed (natural dye) and waxed
- Brass buckle and pendant
Characteristics of the "rain-guard" and the grip
- "Rain-cover" made of vegetable tanned leather hardened with animal gelatine (boiled leather), dyed and waxed (natural dye) made in one piece and held by an internal seam (invisible from the outside)
- Grip made of vegetable-tanned leather glued with animal gelatine. Dyed (natural dye) and waxed. The four "stops" have been made by winding an annealed brass wire and maintained at the back by small brass spikes as on the original pieces.
- For the creation of the scabbard and the "rain-guard" I was inspired by the altarpiece (dating from 1467) of the church of St Michaël in Lütjenburg in northern Germany.
- For the grip's covering I was also inspired by this source and by some preserved pieces.
- It should be noted that this type of scabbard was originally worn directly attached to the armour by means of a small metal hook and a small bracelet with a buckle acting as a sword belt. At the request of my client I have nevertheless adapted it to be worn on a belt.
